We hope you enjoy Clifford C. Cottontail, the little mascot of The Chanler. He also goes by Cliff! You may not think a place like The Chanler would have a little mascot, but Cliff's story is one we like to tell.
Take a stroll around our lawns and gardens and you are sure to run into one of our long-eared friends. You may be interested to learn that even though cottontails frolic so abundantly in Rhode Island, it brings to light man’s effect on our planet.
The rabbit you see around The Chanler is the Eastern Cottontail, which was introduced to the area in the early 1900’s. With the introduction of the Eastern Cottontail and area development causing loss of habitat, Rhode Island’s native rabbit - the New England Cottontail - is at dangerous population levels. The species is now a candidate for the United States Endangered Species Act.
