48 Hours: Immerse Yourself in Newport

The Perfect Newport Getaway

There are a variety of things to do in Newport, Rhode Island and your stay at The Chanler at Cliff Walk puts you at the center of it all. Whether you’re interested in soaking up the sun on our pristine beaches or are interested in exploring the architectural delights of historic Newport, we’ve got a plan for you. See our proposal for the perfect 48 hours in Newport this Fall.

Day One:

8:00am: Comfort & Bliss

Enjoy breakfast in The Chanler's Veranda and observe breathtaking views of the sunrise and ocean. Indulge in Kenyon Grist Mill Buttermilk and Honey Pancakes, local to Rhode Island since 1696. Or try our signature Spiced Pear French Toast alongside fresh squeezed orange juice.

9:30am-12:30pm: Nature's Beauty

On warmer days, allow us to arrange for bicycle rentals. Ride a bicycle along scenic Ocean Drive where you can see many of the majestic mansions in Newport. Stop at Brenton Point to take a breather in the park, visit ocean vistas or fly kites in the breeze. On cooler days, the views are equally enjoyable from your car, with several special locations where you can stop & park to enjoy the view or take pictures.

1:00pm-4:30pm: Audrain Automobile Museum or Shopping Downtown

One of Newport's hidden treasures, the Audrain Automobile Museum makes for the perfect afternoon trip. Marvel at over 160 of the rarest and most remarkable vehicles in history, dating back all the way to the beginning of the 20th Century. If shopping is more of your thing, Newport's downtown is known for it's wonderful boutique shops that line Spring Street. Explore vintage antique shops that are sure to provide you with a couple of gems to take with you when you depart.

6:30pm-9:00pm: Deluxe Delicacy

Indulge in elegant dining at the Spiced Pear. Our restaurant at The Chanler features an open-air kitchen and continental cuisine inspired by the finest French kitchens. The 'New England Tasting Menu' is a truly mouthwatering experience with seafood from the eastern seabord and locally grown ingredients from nearby Rhode Island farms.

9:00pm: The Perfect Ending

Here we have two equally wonderful options. The first is for marshmallow lovers everywhere. After dinner, head to our firepit with a s'mores kit and roast your own marshmallows. Is something a little more romantic in your plans? Return to your room for a Butler Drawn Bath while sipping Spiced Pear sparkling wine.

Day Two:

8:00am: A Relaxing Way to Start the Day

Wake up to signature continental in-room dining to be enjoyed in the comfort of your bathrobe and slippers. Have breakfast next to a crackling, warm fireplace. This one of a kind breakfast includes house made pastries and a vast selection of teas and coffees.

9:30am-12:00pm: Made for a Mansion

When taking a trip to Newport, you must include visits to our iconic mansions. A great way to reach the mansions is by strolling along Cliff Walk, where you will have a stunning view of the ocean on one side and the magnificent mansions on the other. Bask in the stunning architectural details of elaborate “cottages” and take a tour of their interiors and grounds, from Doris Duke's Rough Point mansion to The Vanderbilts' Breakers mansion. There is an element of elegance that you’ll find in the historic collections of the twelve+ properties located on over 80 acres. It’s a tour that is not to be missed!

12:30pm-4:00pm: The Wharf

Have our complimentary house car drive you from the mansions to Bannister's Wharf for lunch and shopping. Indulge in The Black Pearl Restaurant's lobster, scallops, crab and other seafood fare. When you're all filled up, head to Brick Market Place for specialty shops and Newport boutiques.

4:00pm-5:00pm: Lawn Tennis Match

Located about a 10 minute walk from Bannister's Wharf, the International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum honors countless Tennis legends and offers a truly unique collection of memorabilia not seen anywhere else. These were the first tennis courts to host what is now the US Open, and are truly distinguished as tennis is still played on the grounds where virtually every historic champion has graced its beautiful grass courts.

7:00pm-9:00pm: A Family Affair

Venture to Thames Street Kitchen, owned and operated by two chef friends and their wives, who are ironically twin-sisters from Newport. This establishment is a "field to fork" eatery that only offers locally-sourced food. With an option for a communal table, you can experience local company with local flavor prepared by talented local people.

9:30pm: Nightcap

After dinner, have our signature Spiced Pear Martini made by Maurice at The Spiced Pear Bar. You can then walk over to the sofa near the fireplace to warm up. While you're away, turndown service will be performed with sweet treats left on your pillow each night.
